Independent Living Facilities

Independent Living Offers a Community Experience

Sometimes referred to as retirement communities or active living communities, they are designed for seniors who are mostly independent but still desire the security and conveniences of community living.

They may include houses, cottages or apartment settings. Most offer housekeeping services, laundry facilities, linen service, meals or access to meals, local transportation, and planned social activities. Some also provide at least one group activity per day and may include swimming pool/spa, exercise facilities, community lounges, and libraries.

Health care is usually not provided, but they allow a home health aide, therapist or nurse to come into an apartment with medical and personal care. Some of them offer some services for a fee to assist with medication management, shower and dressing assistance.

Private funds are most often used to pay for independent living apartments. Some are rented, while others are owned. Some senior apartments may be subsidized by federal funding.
